Betty modeling one of our favorite coats!

So we made THE CUTEST Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coat for a Boston Terrier this weekend. I couldn’t resist snapping some photos of my one pug, Betty, in this coat. Very special thanks to one of our biggest supporters, Aaron, for bringing us these fantastic yellow and black polka dot shoe laces back from Nashville, TN! These ties took the coat to the next level and I couldn’t imagine it with out them so THANK YOU! ❤

These are just a preview, to take a look at all of the photos, check out our Flickr Set!

Nothing goes better with Phillies baseball than an Upcycled Umbrella Beverage Cozy!

Well it’s that time of the year again; autumn is in full swing, the weather is sweater-like and and we here in Philadelphia are, once again, singing the sweet songs of playoff baseball!

Partyin on Broad after the 2008 World Series with some good friends and some perfect strangers!

I am a giant Phillies fan and that is an understatement. I became one in 2008 when we won the World Series against the Rays. Now, I understand that this is what constitutes a “fair-weather-fan”, but after I saw what happened to Philadelphia when we won; the craziness and insane amount of energy that surrounded me on Broad Street whist chugging a Miller High Life 40 in front of several Horse Cops in a city that I always thought had a stick shoved up its you-know-what for the 4 years I had been living here at the time had a very large impact on me and turned me into a Phillies fan, FOR LIFE.

I began watching every game, loving every player (except Pat Burrell, I never loved him esp after seeing his “Cribs” episode on MTV and I’m glad hes gone to tell you the truth) and when we went to the World Series last year against the Yankees, me and my boyfriend Aaron went so far as to write a rap song to help pump this city up. It’s called Cheesesteaks Over Cheesecakes.

ANYWAY- so mainly I just wanted to give you some of my background when it comes to the Phillies, because (and I hate having to use this word to describe my work) Crafts and Sports usually don’t mix well, and I know I have seen my fair share of terrible “compromises”…

Phillies Quilt... actually this is kind of nice, but you get what I mean about "Sports Crafts"

So this year I wanted to do something Phillies-ish but I couldn’t think of something that would utilize the water resistant properties of the umbrella nylon in a way that was super functional, UNTIL I made Phillies Beverage Cozies from  broken umbrellas that come right off the streets of Philadelphia!

Phillies beverage cozies are made to fit beer bottles or cans!

Now our Product of the Month, these bad boys only cost $5, are handmade by yours truly and keep your hands warm and your beverages cold, from the Fox and Hound to Broad Street, these Cozies are a must have for any serious Phillies fan! Features Phillies logo, eco-fi felt and insulation. We can also make them into Pint Cozies for your Ice Cream, just send us a message with your purchase!

Also available: Phillies Pint IceCream Cozies! Just send a message with order!

#Umbrelladelphia here we come!

It’s been no secret that my passion in life is saving broken umbrellas. At Recycling Zychal, we are quickly approaching our 1000th umbrella thanks to a group of dedicated friends, colleagues and online readers around the world who have taken the time out to save one themselves, retweeted a call to action that we’ve posted, or even just told a friend. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all of you who have helped us get this far, you are all truly appreciated and have the utmost respect from me and the people who work here at Recycling Zychal.

The people closest to me know that no matter how far this company goes or how big it gets, I will always be out in the eye of the storm, chasing after mangled umbrellas blowing across the street, digging in trash cans because I spotted the handle sticking up out of the bag, and rummaging around City Hall scooping up and saving as many broken umbrellas as I can handle, regardless that they are always black at City Hall. This is my life, saving these broken umbrellas is what keeps me going, as silly as that may sound, I honestly love the hunt.

Last year at this time, we launched a few different programs to help collect broken umbrellas around the city of Philadelphia, but this year, as the Fall weather, temperature and, of course, torrential rain and hail come around, I wanted to launch something interactive. I’ve been in the business of collecting broken umbrellas for about 4 years now, and having gathered enough information about why people wouldn’t want to rescue one, I think I’ve come up with the best possible solution that will match our rescuers up with “reporters”.

Introducing #umbrelladelphia

#umbrelladelphia is a campaign we are launching so that where ever you may be, what ever you may be wearing or doing, you can still contribute to helping these umbrellas get rescued without having to get them yourself. Using the twitter application on your phone, you can simply tweet the location of the broken umbrella that you spot, give a short description or score BONUS POINTS by taking a photo. You just have to make sure you include the tag #umbrelladelphia in the tweet so that it will come up on our live feed. One of our umbrella rescuers, or even myself, will come and rescue it and bada bing bada boom, everyone wins! Tweet us 5 different broken umbrella locations and guess who gets a present!? YOU DO!

To help spread the word about this new initiative, we will be using both guerrilla and conventional marketing tactics. Be sure to look for chalk stenciled #umbrelladelphia tags all over the city, and definitely make sure you pick up a free copy of next months GRID magazine where our first ever advertisement will be.

If you would like to volunteer to help spread the word, we have all different types of promotion and marketing materials, please send me a message if you are interested in helping, and as always, there are presents for anyone who helps 🙂

Recycling Zychal featured in the CityPaper!

Hey everyone, if you are in the Philadelphia area, today is your last day to pick up one of the CityPapers featuring Recycling Zychal in it!

On the 38th page you will see the article, please feel free to cut it out and magnetize it to your fridge Roseanne style.

Julia West wrote a fantastic little article about my obsession with broken umbrellas, what I make from them and even gave readers a call to action to donate! I love it!

Even if you are out of the Philadelphia are, you can still check out the article on the CityPaper website

Things have been steadily busy over here at RZ HQ and we’ve been prepping for our favorite broken umbrella season which is quickly approaching! Just a reminder that if you have any broken umbrellas to donate, you can check out the tutorial I made to make sending them easier and cheaper for you, and that video is located here

We’ve also been getting alot of inquiries about wholesale which is so awesome and welcome any interested stores to contact us to do a special one of a kind line for their boutique! All wholesale orders are custom made and no 2 are ever the same because one-of-a-kind is not an option here at Recycling Zychal, its the standard! 😀

Eco Fi Felt now fully stocked with new colors to choose from!

Eco Fi Felt!

You might be wondering why in the world I’m posting something about felt when there’s a killer heat wave going on outside, but I am so stoked about all the new colors we just got in that I couldn’t wait! Plus Eco-Fi Felt is not like Wool felt; it breathes and is light and airy when you need it to be, snug and insulating when you need it to be, and always 100% eco friendly, vegan and awesome!

Also, we will be putting up some new umbrellas this week with a photoshoot scheduled for tomorrow, we’re all super excited about that over here at RZ HQ! To see how much fun we have doing a photoshoot, check out this video of a former photoshoot that we did all DIY style, pugs included!

Our Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coats on Good Day Philadelphia

Our brand new standard size Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coats are available exclusively at Just Dogs Gourmet on 19th and Chestnut

Our Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coats were recently featured on Thursday’s Good Day Philadelphia being modeled by some precious dogs up for adoption at the PSPCA. I am trying to get a copy of the extended clip, but until then, check it here!

Maggie is not only one of the cutest models we've ever had, shes also up for adoption! Please call the Philadelphia PSPCA if you are interested and I'll personally donate a coat to her!

Perfect day for a HOOD!

Well Philadelphia, it’s MISTING, which means it’s not wet enough to carry an umbrella, but just over the line where your hair goes from manageable in a ponytail to uncontrollable frizz ball. And you know it always mists when we have something to do, so how can we live, ladies?!

Oh that’s right- with a HOOD from Recycling Zychal! I’m wore mine to go to the post office today and was stopped by 2 separate and, might I add, stylish women on my way, who all loved the convenience of the HOOD and wanted to know where they could buy one. I was out of business cards, so I wrote down my website with a code for 20% off a HOOD if they purchased one before the end of the week.

A grey, misty day calls for a brown dress and a HOOD

I wanted to be sure I extended the offer to you all as well!

Enter this special code in when you place your order for a 20% off discount: AQUANET1989

Laundry can be such a bummer…

…but there is nothing better than a nice, warm, clean load of broken umbrellas just waiting to get repurposed!

We’re very busy over here at Recycling Zychal getting ready to re-organize our inventory so that it can all look as nice as this:

and we are proud to announce that we have just currently stocked our 300th black broken umbrella, bringing our total amount of broken umbrellas to somewhere around 750! I can’t believe we are only a few rainy days away from having 1000 broken umbrellas in stock. Thank you to all of my Umbrella Rescuers, friends, and associates that have helped Recycling Zychal to get this far and save so many broken umbrellas from a life in the landfill.

Photos from our outing with Urban Outfitters!

Recycling Zychal's set up for the Go Green Market at Urban Outfitters HQ, what a beautiful piece of wood!

Last Thursday, on Earth Day, which is also Recycling Zychal’s birthday, we were invited to Urban Outfitters Headquarters as a guest artist to show off our Upcycled Umbrella goods at their Go Green Craft Market! Not only was the facility absolutely beautiful, but we made a ton of new friends and might even be doing a Flora Fauna Function Program at Urban where bins will be set up around the entrances for employees to donate their broken umbrellas to us, how cool is that!?

I wanted to share some photos with you guys from the event, which, in my eyes, was truly successful! We sold out of our Organic Cat Nip Filled Upcycled Umbrella Cat Toys and I am proud to announce the winner of our Upcycled Umbrella Dog Coat Raffle is Lindsey Reisser, an employee at Urban Outfitters! She will be getting a fully customized Upcycled Umbrella Dog Coat exclusively made for her pup!
Congrats Lindsey!
