#Umbrelladelphia here we come!

It’s been no secret that my passion in life is saving broken umbrellas. At Recycling Zychal, we are quickly approaching our 1000th umbrella thanks to a group of dedicated friends, colleagues and online readers around the world who have taken the time out to save one themselves, retweeted a call to action that we’ve posted, or even just told a friend. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all of you who have helped us get this far, you are all truly appreciated and have the utmost respect from me and the people who work here at Recycling Zychal.

The people closest to me know that no matter how far this company goes or how big it gets, I will always be out in the eye of the storm, chasing after mangled umbrellas blowing across the street, digging in trash cans because I spotted the handle sticking up out of the bag, and rummaging around City Hall scooping up and saving as many broken umbrellas as I can handle, regardless that they are always black at City Hall. This is my life, saving these broken umbrellas is what keeps me going, as silly as that may sound, I honestly love the hunt.

Last year at this time, we launched a few different programs to help collect broken umbrellas around the city of Philadelphia, but this year, as the Fall weather, temperature and, of course, torrential rain and hail come around, I wanted to launch something interactive. I’ve been in the business of collecting broken umbrellas for about 4 years now, and having gathered enough information about why people wouldn’t want to rescue one, I think I’ve come up with the best possible solution that will match our rescuers up with “reporters”.

Introducing #umbrelladelphia

#umbrelladelphia is a campaign we are launching so that where ever you may be, what ever you may be wearing or doing, you can still contribute to helping these umbrellas get rescued without having to get them yourself. Using the twitter application on your phone, you can simply tweet the location of the broken umbrella that you spot, give a short description or score BONUS POINTS by taking a photo. You just have to make sure you include the tag #umbrelladelphia in the tweet so that it will come up on our live feed. One of our umbrella rescuers, or even myself, will come and rescue it and bada bing bada boom, everyone wins! Tweet us 5 different broken umbrella locations and guess who gets a present!? YOU DO!

To help spread the word about this new initiative, we will be using both guerrilla and conventional marketing tactics. Be sure to look for chalk stenciled #umbrelladelphia tags all over the city, and definitely make sure you pick up a free copy of next months GRID magazine where our first ever advertisement will be.

If you would like to volunteer to help spread the word, we have all different types of promotion and marketing materials, please send me a message if you are interested in helping, and as always, there are presents for anyone who helps 🙂

Recycling Zychal featured in the CityPaper!

Hey everyone, if you are in the Philadelphia area, today is your last day to pick up one of the CityPapers featuring Recycling Zychal in it!

On the 38th page you will see the article, please feel free to cut it out and magnetize it to your fridge Roseanne style.

Julia West wrote a fantastic little article about my obsession with broken umbrellas, what I make from them and even gave readers a call to action to donate! I love it!

Even if you are out of the Philadelphia are, you can still check out the article on the CityPaper website

Things have been steadily busy over here at RZ HQ and we’ve been prepping for our favorite broken umbrella season which is quickly approaching! Just a reminder that if you have any broken umbrellas to donate, you can check out the tutorial I made to make sending them easier and cheaper for you, and that video is located here

We’ve also been getting alot of inquiries about wholesale which is so awesome and welcome any interested stores to contact us to do a special one of a kind line for their boutique! All wholesale orders are custom made and no 2 are ever the same because one-of-a-kind is not an option here at Recycling Zychal, its the standard! 😀

Awesome Pug-Approved Vegan Dog Treats sold on Etsy!

When I was younger, it seemed like all the cool things came straight outta Compton, despite the fact that I lived in the rather quiet former coal mining town of Scranton Pennsylvania. Of course this was long before Dwight Shrute and his pals at The Office moved in with their beet stained teeth.

Yum Yum, these healthy dog biscuits are all natural and all vegan!

But now a days, it seems like the coolest little things are coming from the most unexpected little towns in the Midwest and South and these Vegan Dog Treats from Farm Dog Naturals are no exception. Hailing from Elmwood Tennessee, Rita Hogan and her ensemble of dog loving, heath conscious employees at FDN have been crafting these babies up for the past three years. Best yet, she insists on using local ingredients -I’m assuming this does not include Jack Daniels 😉 but they do boast- what I would consider- human-grade ingredients such as apples, chick peas and even her home grown vegetables, I know I’m getting hungry.

Great packaging, simple, easy to read and yes RECYCLABLE!

And just when you thought Rita Hogan couldn’t get any cooler, it turns out that the recipe is based off of a preservative-free bread recipe that women used to make for soldiers, and instead of testing her variation on soldiers, shes tested them on her 5 PUGS! Rita, you are awesome!!

One of five taste testing pugs that Rita owns, how cute is this face!!

At the great price of $8.99 for a 6 pack, I hope all of you order a batch from Farm Dog Naturals, there are tons of flavors to choose from and just knowing that each and every one of these treats is made with love and, most importantly, without animal bi-products, how can you resist!?

Eco Fi Felt now fully stocked with new colors to choose from!

Eco Fi Felt!

You might be wondering why in the world I’m posting something about felt when there’s a killer heat wave going on outside, but I am so stoked about all the new colors we just got in that I couldn’t wait! Plus Eco-Fi Felt is not like Wool felt; it breathes and is light and airy when you need it to be, snug and insulating when you need it to be, and always 100% eco friendly, vegan and awesome!

Also, we will be putting up some new umbrellas this week with a photoshoot scheduled for tomorrow, we’re all super excited about that over here at RZ HQ! To see how much fun we have doing a photoshoot, check out this video of a former photoshoot that we did all DIY style, pugs included!

Chiclet in her Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coat!

Chiclet is a pug after my own heart! Check out these fabulous pictures taken by her owner, Kara, of Chiclet showing off her custom made Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coat!

Kara wrote, “We love how the coat turned out and even Chiclet doesn’t mind when we put it on her, it must make her feel special!  Thanks so much for putting the ‘tlc’ into it.”

I believe this is a Totes umbrella, so it’s a great quality nylon- who would ever want to throw this awesome fabric away?! I, myself used this pattern for one of the original dog rain coat prototypes modeled by my pug, Betty. I must admit- GOOD TASTE!

Casper’s IZOD Upcycled Umbrella Dog Rain Coat

A good friend of mine and fellow designer, Andres, recently tipped his sister off to my dog rain coats and after being impressed by my work, she decided to order one! I love when friends order things because I like to put a little-bit-extra extra special love into them, just as like a personal thank you for helping spread the word.

I chose to use red contrast top stitching to pull out the red in the IZOD logo. I would have liked to put the IZOD logo somewhere on the back, but because of its position on the nylon, I wasn’t able to; but I think it came out looking great the way it is and so did Andres’ sister!

From rescued umbrella to rescued chihuahua

This coat was made for a little chihuahua who won the Pawesome Upcycled Umbrella Dog Coat Giveaway

A friend of mine told me that this was the best coat he ever saw me make. He's over alot and he has seen me make hundreds of coats so I was really flattered! FUN FACT: if you follow the world of Recycling Zychal on youtube, he's "the hands" in the "how to strip a broken umbrella" video tutorial.

Remmy was rescued from a home with over 100 chihuahuas who had never even gone outside, how sad! Obviously Recycling Zychal deals with a different type of rescue, but still, his story hit close to home,  and we were so happy to fashion him a rescued umbrella dog coat to keep his little body dry while it rains!

This guy is like the Ashton Kutcher of dogs, I love his face!

What a little angel!

The handle on this broken umbrella is…

this little pup was hanging out of the trash can, how could I resist!?

AMAAAAAAAAAZING!

Whoever would toss this GEM?

Looks like I scored a Scottish plaid broken umbrella AND a new Christmas Tree topper .. double upcycle/double WIN.

Perfect day for a HOOD!

Well Philadelphia, it’s MISTING, which means it’s not wet enough to carry an umbrella, but just over the line where your hair goes from manageable in a ponytail to uncontrollable frizz ball. And you know it always mists when we have something to do, so how can we live, ladies?!

Oh that’s right- with a HOOD from Recycling Zychal! I’m wore mine to go to the post office today and was stopped by 2 separate and, might I add, stylish women on my way, who all loved the convenience of the HOOD and wanted to know where they could buy one. I was out of business cards, so I wrote down my website with a code for 20% off a HOOD if they purchased one before the end of the week.

A grey, misty day calls for a brown dress and a HOOD

I wanted to be sure I extended the offer to you all as well!
